Unlike the Hajj, Umrah is not confined to a specific period and can be performed at any time of the year – except during the Hajj season in the month of Dzulhijjah. This means you are free to perform Umrah whenever you have the means! However, while the timing is flexible, the question of when is the best time to embark on this pilgrimage remains. In short, certain seasons or times are more favourable than others, and several factors can help you decide.
The month of Ramadan
One such favoured time to perform Umrah is the month of Ramadan. From an Islamic perspective, performing Umrah in Ramadan offers rewards equivalent to those gained from performing Hajj, as mentioned by our Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. in the following Hadith:
عَنْ اِبْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّم: “عُمْرَةٌ فِي رَمَضَانَ تَعْدِلُ حِجَّةً
It was narrated from Ibn ‘Abbas that the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.) said:
“Umrah during Ramadan is equivalent to Hajj.”

Every year, thousands of Muslims gather in Makkah during Ramadan to fast, perform Taraweeh prayers, and dedicate the final 10 days of Ramadan to increasing their acts of worship. This unique and spiritually fulfilling atmosphere makes it a preferred time to perform Umrah.
Apart from the month of Ramadan, the best time to go for Umrah depends on your preferences, needs, and budget. Let’s explore a few factors that can guide your decision:
Makkah can be extremely hot during summer (up to 45 degrees Celsius!) from June to August, which can be very challenging for you to perform your Umrah. If you prefer to avoid the scorching heat, you may consider visiting Makkah between November to February, when the temperature is cooler and more pleasant. Yet, keep in mind that many pilgrims prefer to travel during the cooler months, so do not be surprised to see bigger crowds and higher prices!
Some people enjoy the liveliness of large crowds, while others prefer a more serene experience. If you are one of the latter, it’s best to plan your Umrah trip outside of the peak season such as the month of Ramadan, the winter season, and during school holidays.
Often overlooked, financial consideration is crucial in deciding the timing of your Umrah trip! The cost of travel and accommodations vary significantly throughout the year, with a surge in prices during peak season due to high demand. It’s advisable to compare prices and plan ahead, especially if you’re on a tight budget.
