In 2018, Saudi Arabia introduced the Haramain High-Speed Railway, a train service designed to enhance the pilgrimage journey between Makkah, Madinah, and Jeddah. The trains are among the world’s top 10 fastest, reaching speeds of up to 300 kph. This initiative has reduced travel time between Makkah and Madinah from a four-to-five-hour car journey to a mere two-and-a-half-hour train ride, and also relieved traffic congestion between these cities. Here, you’ll find all the essential information you need to know about this train!
Train Capacity and Stations
Each train on this railway can accommodate up to 417 passengers, comprising 113 Business Class seats and 304 Economy Class seats. These trains stop at five stations:
Comfortable Journey
For those who prioritise comfort during their travels, the Haramain High-Speed Railway does not disappoint! Passengers can enjoy comfortable seating, air conditioning, clean restrooms, and a cafeteria selling light refreshments.
Luggage Allowances
Passengers are allowed to carry one large piece of luggage weighing up to 25 kg, with dimensions not exceeding 65 x 55 x 35 cm, in addition to a smaller hand luggage item like a backpack, laptop bag, or purse.
Smaller items can be conveniently stowed in overhead compartments, while larger luggage should be placed in the designated area at the rear of the train compartment. It is advisable to adhere to these luggage size requirements and to label your belongings with your contact information to prevent any loss, particularly during peak travel seasons.
Ticket Prices
The pricing for tickets is reasonable, with rates differing based on the journey and class selected. A one-way ticket from Makkah to Madinah (or vice versa) costs SAR 150 (USD 40) for an Economy Class seat, while Business Class is priced at SAR 315 (USD 84).
Tickets can be easily purchased online via their website or through the “HHR Train” mobile app. While on-site ticket purchases are possible, it is advisable to secure your seat by buying online in advance. Remember to print your ticket confirmation for verification on the day of travel.
Operating Hours
Operating hours may differ among stations, but for Makkah and Madinah, the railway operates daily from 6.30 AM to 12.30 AM. For specific schedules, you may refer to the timetable of train services available on their official website.
Passengers with Special Needs
The Haramain High-Speed Railway is committed to serving passengers with special needs, offering wheelchair assistance at stations and designated seats in the trains. Passengers with special needs are also eligible for a discount, provided they present an official ID when booking and boarding the train.
